Geek Gives 1-Up to Retro-Gaming Handheld

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

bfc7_gp2x_wiz_mame_console_emulatorOver at BoingBoing Gadgets, Rob “The Boss” Beschizza takes a Wiz on modern games. To be precise, he has reviewed the tiny, retro game-playing handheld console, the GP2X Wiz, and decrees it “The best portable yet for retrogamers.”

I’m a retro-gamer. I used to beat all comers at Street Fighter 2 (SNES) playing with my feet. I once lent that same SNES and a copy of Super Mario Kart to an apartment full of weed-smoking stoner friends so they could practice and “offer me more of a challenge” (result, a thrashing for me). So I’m well into the idea of putting these classics in my pocket, but for one thing…

The price. The GPX2, from Korean company GamePark, costs $180. This is steep, even on a million dollar per year blogger’s salary. On the other hand, the machine has a 320×240 2.8” AMOLED touch screen display, a gig of memory and an SD card slot. It also runs a flavor of Linux, meaning that once I have laid out my $180, I can keep my cash and use emulators and hypothetical collection of legal ROMS. In short, $180 puts every old game, ever, on a handheld. Is this starting to excite you yet?

Galileo Thermometer

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

galileo-thermometerThe ancient Catholic Church derided Galileo as a heretic simply because his scientific line of thinking did not concur with what the Church thought, but bring home a piece of the legend today in the form of the Galileo Thermometer. What makes the Galileo Thermometer different from the rest as it comes in the form of a single floating disk, encased between a couple of glass panes in the process. It doesn’t matter which continent you live on, since the temperature reading is available in both Fahrenheit and Celsius readings, making this one decent desk accessory or functional decoration for your home or office. Interested? ThinkGeek is offering it for $49.99 a pop.

‘Slide to Unlock’ Doormat Turns Entrance into iDoor

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

slide_to_unlock doormatThis ugly rubber doormat costs $50. Despite this setback, it rocks, being the home-ornament equivalent of full frontal nerdity.

The “Slide to Unlock” mat is, of course, a play on the iPhone’s unlock screen and joins the “127.0.0.1” doormat in our hallway of, erm, doormat fame.  I’d actually buy one of these except that I live on the top floor of the building and there is only one neighbor who would see it. He also happens to be the only person in the world who would both get the joke immediately and at the same time hate me because of it. Thanks, neighbor. Enjoy trying to sleep this weekend when we have our late night karaoke party.

Singing Gizmo Gremlins Plush

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

singing-mogwaiEver watch the Gremlins years back? Brings back memories of a cute little bugger that comes with specific care instructions, which were obviously disobeyed resulting in a whole lot of chaos in the neighborhood. Well, nice to see ThinkGeek offer the Singing Gizmo Gremlins Plush that won’t spawn nefarious copies of himself when fed after midnight or getting wet.

Now you can take your own cuddly plush Singing Gizmo home with you. He’s a little smaller than life-size and looking a bit mischievous. Shake him and he sings the soothing song of the Mogwai while slowly rocking back and forth. Please don’t get him wet, expose him to bright lights or feed him after midnight. We can’t be responsible for the consequences.

Looks (and sounds, literally) like the perfect gift for any 1980s movies fan without costing a whole bundle with him going for $22.99.

Solid Metal Airsoft Pocket Pistol

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

airsoftSmall but potent – that’s how we would describe the Solid Metal Airsoft Pocket Pistol from ThinkGeek. Heck, it is tiny enough to be concealed in just about any pocket, and nice to know it is made out of solid metal alloy for a greater and more realistic feel whenever you handle it. All you need to do is whip it out for impromptu office battles whenever the boss is not around, but choose your targets carefully since you will only be able to shoot six times before you open yourself up to incoming fire during reloading. The shots are hard enough to sting and perhaps even cause bruises in some cases, so use this with extreme caution. We need not stress that this is not meant for little kids, and never, ever fire at somebody’s face. Each $9.99 purchase comes with 25 rounds of airsoft ammunition.

Japanese WALL-E Mini Figure Set

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

WALL-E was one of the better movies that came out last year, not only because of its super cool animation but the cute characters in there are certainly more than memorable, while sending a dire message to humankind that we ought to learn to keep our environment clean for future generations instead of absconding all responsibility by jumping aboard a self-sustaining spaceship. Enter the Japanese WALL-E Mini Figure Set to decorate your desk at home or at the office.

Now you can collect this fine WALL-E mini figure set imported from Japan. It’s WALL-E, Eve and all his robot pals from the movie in itty-bitty-form on a snap together base. Yep you get the full set of figures you see in the image, which would normally comprise five vending machine capsules. So rather than forcing you to stand on a street corner in Tokyo pumping 100 yen coins into a capsule toy machine hoping for the “perfect” WALL-E figure set we’ve done all the dirty work for you. Doo itashimashite!

Bear in mind that when they called this the Japanese WALL-E Mini Figure Set, they mean business. After all, when assembled together, it measures a mere 5.5″ in length. $17.99 is the asking price if you want to bring all 8 robots and their plastic base home.

La Crosse Battery Charger with LCD Display

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Battery chargers are just that, right? Wrong! ThinkGeek has brought us the La Crosse Battery Charger with LCD Display, and judging by its name, you will be able to have more fun compared to watching paint dry as your exhausted batteries are being juiced up by the device.

This charger works with all NiCd and NiMH “AA” and “AAA” rechargeable batteries and can charge AA & AAA simultaneously. The LCD display shows capacity for each battery when charging is complete. This charger will not charge defective batteries and has overheat detection to protect over-charging. The battery charger can also be put in one of four different modes: Charge, Discharge, Refresh and Test mode. The Refresh mode can help to restore old re-chargeable batteries to their optimum condition. The LCD display provides an individual readout for each of the four compartments and can show charging current (in mA), time elapsed (in hh:mm), terminal voltage (in V) and accumulated capacities (in mAh or Ah).

We’re pretty sure you’re not going to charge for admission for folks who want to view the LCD display as their bunch of batteries are being charged, but at least it offers something different compared to stock chargers we see in the market today. The La Crosse Battery Charger with LCD Display is currently going for $39.99.

Dark Blade 3-Channel R/C Helicopter

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

ThinkGeek seems to have a penchant for remote controlled helicopters, and their latest attempt in this field is the Dark Blade 3-Channel R/C Helicopter. This surprisingly affordable $29.95 device is an original ThinkGeek creation, featuring a “futuristic drop-ship style design with precise flying characteristics and an innovative rear propeller system.” In addition, it is touted to be the smallest 3-channel R/C copter in the world at the moment, so we won’t recommend leaving the windows open while you fly this thing indoors lest it crashes to the ground with a strong gust of wind.

The Dark Blade 3-Channel R/C Helicopter has dual rotors on the top which spin in opposite directions. These opposite spinning blades cancel out uncontrolled torque making for incredibly stable flight. For forward and reverse motion the tail rotor then blows up or down, pitching the copter forward or backward and causing it to move in that direction. It’s a great control system and a pleasure to fly.

The rate of diminishing returns here ain’t too shabby after all – a 10 minute charge time results in a 7 minute fly time, which is much better compared to others we’ve seen in the market. We’d strongly recommend you getting rechargeable batteries to go along with it though, as half a dozen AA batteries are required at any one time to keep the whole gig going.

Energy Detective helps you save money

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Want to go on an environmental friendly drive in your home but don’t know where to start? Well, instead of overhauling your entire home’s consumer electronics equipment, why not purchase this Energy Detective instead? This meter is able to help you shave off anywhere from 10% to 20% of your electric bill simply by measuring just how much juice you’re using at the moment. Once you have an idea of the amount of energy being sucked up by your home, you will then take more pro-active steps in reducing it. Make the process fun by turning it into a family project as well!

You no longer have to wait for the ‘electricity bill surprise’. Instead, TED will accurately tell you what your bill is going to be long before the electric bill arrives. With its patented solution to home energy management, TED quantifies electricity and displays the results on its easy-to-read LCD screen. Think of it as your home’s speedometer. With a two-second reaction time, TED provides immediate feedback on energy usage. You can see what you’re spending on electricity each second, as well as what you’ve spent so far today or so far this month.

We guess it won’t be long before you save money after investing $149.99 on this.

Pick Up Chicks with Japanese Chopsticks Practice Game

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

You know how hard it is to grapple with a pair of chopsticks the first time round? Granted, those living in certain parts of Asia have grown up with a pair and using it to eat is second nature to them, but for some of us who have yet to master the art of chopsticks, ThinkGeek has a solution with the Japanese Chopsticks Practice Game.

Here’s how you play: dump all the chicks into the little bowl. Then take turns picking them out. The smaller the chick, the harder they are to pick up, and the more points you get. And if you want to really get tough, you can pick out only one gender of chicks. That’s right – if you look really close, you’ll see that some chicks are boys (orange beaks) and some are girls (pink beaks and eyelashes). Why? We have no idea. This is a fun set to help the young learn and to help the not-as-young hone their chopstick skills. Here, chicky, chicky, chicky.

So, why not pick up this $19.99 game today and spend your entire weekend picking up chicks? At least you know there is no risk of catching any STDs with these birds.
