The Limousine, An Unrideable Stretch-Bike

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Limousine bike

This is “Limousine”, a stretch-bicyle from Wouter Mijland. It is completely impractical, the handlebars put out of the riders reach by the iron-pipe extensions, and even if you were Reed Richards that huge triangle would surely flex and buck like an unmanned fire-hose.

But I love it. Perhaps it is the ridiculous inclusion of the everyday practicalities like lights and a pump on such an outlandish machine, or maybe it is the clean lines and seamless construction. Either way, it actually starts to make tall-bikes look like sensible transport solutions.

You can’t buy it either. The description, “‘Limousine’, 2008, bycicle [sic], iron pipes”, combined with the Flash site, telegraph that this is art. And who would want it anyway when you could hop onto Mijland’s other cycle project, a bike/shopping cart hybrid (below)?

Review Time: JH Audio’s Ridiculously Expensive, Totally Awesome Custom Earbuds

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

pr_jh13_f

We all know a good earbud is hard to find. Just open up a new iPod, iPhone or hell any portable audio device out there and have a listen to the included ‘buds. They’re crap, right? JH audio is on the opposite end of the spectrum. Its newest bespoke earbuds, the JH13s, deliver some of the crazy-best aural experiences we’ve ever heard in an earbud. Here’s an excerpt from reviewer Jackson Lynch:

The buds delivered fantastic sound separation with uncompromising booming bass, rattling mids and crystalline highs. For a lark, we tried mating the JH13s with the Ray Samuels Audio P-51 Mustang high-resolution headphone amp and ALO Audio’s 30-pin iPod line-out cable, just to see if that could improve on what we deemed to be aural perfection.

Adding these two (expensive) components opened the floodgates of unadulterated sound, yielding the richest, most complete experience we’ve ever coaxed out of a set of earbuds. Yes, the JH13s are terribly expensive, but they also make for the most luxurious listening this side of heaven.

Zune HD applications confirmed

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

It’s been debated for some time as to whether or not the Zune HD will feature apps, similar to its competitor, Apple’s iPod touch; many people expected the more logical solution, that it would, though it had yet to be confirmed by Microsoft itself.

Zip-Together Headphone Cords Eliminate Tangles

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

London-based designer Lee Washington has a solution to the problem of earbud cords getting tangled up: He’s made it so they can zip together, like the opposing sides of a zip-lock baggie.

It’s a clever and elegant solution — though it looks like the tradeoff is that it makes one of the two cords a bit stiffer and less flexible than before.

Of course, his solution is moot if you know the proper way to wrap headphone cords so they don’t get tangled.

Lee Washington has a bunch of other business ideas, too, such as paperclips shaped like little men. Cute! No word on if or when his zip-together headphones will be commercially available.

New Solar Tiles get Southwest treatment

New curved solar tiles promise to improve solar power generating efficiency ...

New Sole curved solar tiles promise to improve solar power generating efficiency …

Last year, we reported on the development of solar roofing tiles which can take the place of asphalt based roofs and do double duty. But in California, many of the roofs use clay tiles which are layered onto another and give a Spanish style hacienda look. So, while solar tiles have been an intriguing (but sadly, not very efficient) solution to generating solar power, a great many in the Southwest couldn’t embrace the technology. Then came along the Solé.

Made by SRS Energy and available through US Tile, these clay tile looking solar panels are the first curved roof tiles designed for southwestern homes which offer the solar power options. Power wise, a 30 tile section, which has a 3 inch overlap and 14 inch exposure area, can generate 860 kilowatts her hour during a 6 hour solar exposure.

And it seems that SRS has improved the efficiency issue a bit as these tiles are claimed to provide between eight and twenty percent more solar energy than the crystalline silicon panels reported on last year.

And the tiles are independent so that if one tile goes down, the whole system stays generating. Installation comes with SRS monitoring your tiles to make sure they stay healthy and generating power at their maximum output.

The tiles are currently undergoing testing in Philadelphia, but are available through both the SRS and US Tile websites.

Review: Dell Latitude 2100

Monday, August 17th, 2009

pr_green_dell_f

The netbook stemmed from the need to offer a cheap, low powered computing solution for kids in classrooms. Now Dell has come out with an Atom powered portable aimed squarely at the academically minded. Reviewer Priya Ganapati explains:

The 2100’s most striking feature is the matte, rubber-like coating that envelops the netbook. Its grainy texture lets tiny, slippery fingers get a firm grip. It also repels dirt, grime and the occasional candy collision. When one Wired editor put it to the test by grinding a peanut M&M into the façade, we were able to brush the chocolate off with a quick swipe of a damp cloth.

The 10.1-inch display is bright and does well in both bright sunlight and under the harsh fluorescent lighting typically found in public school classrooms. And with the 80-GB hard drive there’s just enough storage space to toss in pictures, homework and maybe a Hannah Montana video or two.

Speaking of downloading Miss Montana, the Latitude 2100 also has a network-activity light built into the top of the lid. This small rectangle illuminates when you are connected to a Wi-Fi network or an ethernet connection. It also flickers (albeit weakly) when we browsed the net. The idea? Making sure kids are not surfing the internet when they should be working on a math problem.

Want to know more? Of course you do! Check out the full take on the Dell Latitude 2100 on our reviews site.
