FCC Eyes Flames Threatening LA Broadcasting, Communications

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

The smoke and haze from the 190-square mile Station Fire near Los Angeles isn’t just making it difficult to see in the area of the San Gabriel Mountains. It’s also having an impact on advanced forms of communications in Southern California: cellphone signals, television and radio broadcasting, even transmissions among the police, sheriff and fire crews battling the blaze and directing evacuation procedures for suburban residents. Federal Communications Commission officials are maintaining close contact with first responders and commercial broadcast interests in the region.

Antique Radio turned into computer case up for sale

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

antique-radio-case-mod_xglcr_6648

It’s not uncommon to find various case mods that could easily provoke drool from most computer loving people.  However, what is rare is getting the chance to actually buy that item.  Typically the best you can hope for are some extra pictures as well as some vague instructions on how it was done.  Which is fine, but for those that lack creative skills, it’s not going to be helpful.  Well if you love the look of this antique radio turned into a computer, now you can actually purchase it instead of just drool over a few pictures.

The radio itself is a tombstone style Delco radio with a front dial that can be illuminated by the flip of a switch.  The computer can be flipped on by pressing one of the knobs located on the front of the computer.  Of course with purchasing something like this the look isn’t the only thing that there is to consider.  You have the computer itself to worry about as well.  You can see the full listing of what the computer has to offer through the Etsy seller’s web page.  If you should decide everything is up to your standards it’s going to cost you quite a bit to get your hands on one of these.  It’s currently priced at $625 on Etsy.

Nokia’s Booklet 3G Is Not a Netbook

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

nokia-booklet-3g

Nokia doesn’t make phones. It makes portable devices. And it appears the Finnish company also doesn’t make netbooks. Instead it makes “mini-laptops”.

Announced today is a brand-new, 3G equipped min-laptop, the Booklet 3G. The 10.1-inch screen and Atom processor put it clearly in the netbook market, but it comes with some extras you won’t find elsewhere; the kind of extras you’d expect from a cellphone manufacturer.

First, the thin (2cm) aluminum case holds an HDMI-out port, along with the usual webcam, Bluetooth and SD card reader. It also has a 3G radio in the form of HSPA and a hot-swappable SIM card slot, and faux-GPS (Wi-Fi triangulation) hooked up to Ovi Maps.

The price? That will be announced on September 2nd, but expect to see this heavily subsidized on a cellphone plan, at least in Europe where people actually buy Nokia phones, sorry, devices.

Hexbugs Micro Robotic Creatures: Newest Toy Sensation?

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

hexbugsWhile I was at Radio Shack the other day, I saw two things that caught my attention. The first was the sign out front was not changed to “The Shack”, even though they officially changed their name to that about a month ago. The two guys working there didn’t seem to know if or when that sign would be changed either.

I also got a chance to see an interesting toy that I’m surprised I haven’t seen advertised during Spongebob Squarepants.

The Hexbugs come in four forms: the Ant, Inchworm, Crab, and Original. I have described each type from left to right in the photo after the jump.

The Ant ($9.99) “reacts to touch” and will go forward until it hits something, and then will go backward.

The Inchworm ($19.99) looks more insect-like than worm, but it features a control that allow two Inchworms to be controlled at the same time.

The Crab ($14.99) not only looks like a crab but behaves like one as it will hide in a shaded area until loud sound or light will bring it out in the open.

The Original ($9.99) will change direction as it reacts to obstacles in its path, as well as reacting to loud sounds.

Each of the Hexbugs come in five different colors, and are available on the Hexbug website.

Experimental Tech Turns Your Coffee Table Into a Universal Remote

Monday, August 17th, 2009

cristal1

Stock up on coasters. A new technology combines the coffee table with a universal remote so that people sitting around the table can tap on a screen to change the channel, turn up the volume or dim the lights.

CRISTAL (Control of Remotely Interfaced Systems using Touch-based Actions in Living spaces) is a research project in user interface that attempts to create a natural way of connecting with devices. The system offers a streaming video view of the living room on a tabletop, so users can can walk up to it, see the layout of the room and interact with the TV or the photo frame.

“We wanted a social aspect to activities such as choosing what to watch on TV and we wanted to make the process easy and intuitive,” says Stacey Scott, assistant professor at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, and a member of the project. A demo of CRISTAL was shown at the Siggraph graphics conference earlier this month.

The idea isn’t completely novel. Microsoft showed off Surface, a multitouch display in 2008 that allows users to interact with it by using gestures.

Universal remotes have become popular in the last few years, but they are still difficult to use. Their greatest flaw, though, may be that they do not help quash those battles over who gets the remote.  CRISTAL solves those problems, says Christian Müller-Tomfelde, an Australian researcher who is currently writing a book on research in tabletop displays.

“It is a clever use of the tabletop as a ‘world-in-miniature’ interface to control room elements,” he says.

Scott and researchers from the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences have been working on the idea for less than a year. It started when Michael Haller, the head of the Media Interaction Lab at the university, found himself frustrated with different remotes for each device: TV, radio and DVD player.

“Every time you get a new device into the living room, you get a new remote with it,” says Scott. “And instead of difficult programmable universal remotes, this offers intuitive mapping of the different devices and home.”

CRISTAL uses a camera to capture the living room and all the devices in it, including lamps and digital picture frames. The captured video is displayed on the multi-touch coffee table. The video image of the device itself is the interface, so a sliding gesture on the image can turn up the volume of the TV, for instance. To watch a movie, drag an image of the movie cover and drop it on to the TV on the multitouch screen.

But it will be a few years before this remote is available at Best Buy. It could take five to 10 years before affordable multitouch tabletops can be created for consumers, says Müller-Tomfelde. “The investment to get such a coffee-table display into the living room is not to be underestimated, as we can see with Microsoft’s Surface technology,” he says.

Scott estimates that a tabletop remote such as CRISTAL could cost $10,000 to $15,000. But she is confident that the idea can become viable enough for consumer production in a few years, especially if it can be combined with Microsoft’s Surface product.

Check out a video demo of CRISTAL below.

Verizon Wireless unveils AD3700 USB modem with ZTE USA

Monday, August 17th, 2009

verizon-ad3700

With more and more folks jet setting around the world and the proliferation of fast mobile connectivity thanks to 3G technology, it makes perfect sense for notebooks to be similarly equipped in order to tackle the well seasoned traveler who absolutely cannot live without an Internet connection for more than a day. Instead of searching for the nearest Wi-Fi hotspot at your destination to get your daily Facebook fix, why not settle for something that is more reliable (and on-demand to boot) in developed areas, which comes in the form of a Mobile Broadband USB modem? Verizon Wireless and ZTE USA have teamed up to bring their latest Mobile Broadband USB modem, the AD3700 to the masses that boasts global connectivity, offering customers access to high-speed networks in over 175 destinations which covers Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO), Global System for Mobile communications (GSM)/General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)/Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) and High Speed Packet Access (HSPA)/Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) wireless platforms.

Among the key features found on the AD3700 include :-

Runs on Verizon Wireless’ high-speed network, which uses EV-DO Revision A (Rev. A) technology
Includes VZAccess Manager software for easy connection management and automatic installation
Swivel hinge USB
Windows Vista/XP/2000 Operating System compatibility
USB 2.0 high-speed interface
Weight of 1.6 ounces
3.1″ x 1.7″ x 0.5″
Lifestyle features:

The AD3700 can be said to be perfect for individuals and organizations that want to make sure there is a way to remain connected while on-the-go, where all you need to do is activate the global feature on your Verizon Wireless account and you’re good to go. Upon doing so, the AD3700 will detect the local network and connect to the fastest Internet speed available automatically, regardless of where you are in the world – of course, it does help if you tend to spend most of your time in fairly developed areas so that you won’t have to “suffer” on painstakingly slow GPRS speeds. The AD3700 USB modem will retail for $79.99 after a $50.00 mail-in rebate alongside a new two-year customer agreement on a Mobile Broadband plan.
