* Remotes and Connectivity: Reason No. 6 Why We’re Fat *

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

While browsing the ever-wider world web today, I came across a story about IBM’s patent of a sort of “Facebook Remote Control.” It was appalling. Do we seriously need more single-purpose devices that will enable us to sit around more wasting more time than we already do? Does anyone really need to seclude themselves from the world even more to publish their lives on yet another teen-infested network? Must we really always be connected to the net? Read on for my ramble concerning a dark side of technology. Read more on this exclusive OSNews article…

Nokia Delays U.S. Launch of Music Service

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

nokia-5800

Nokia will postpone the launch of its ‘Comes with Music’ music subscription service  in the U.S. to next year, according to reports.

Nokia launched  the service, widely seen as a potential iTunes competitor, in the U.K. last year by bundling free unlimited music downloads with some of its handsets. The first of Nokia’s phones, the 5310 XpressMusic, featured the service. Nokia would offer a year’s worth of music to its users free and charge users for it after that. Customers were allowed to keep all the music they already downloaded.

If successful, Nokia could be in a position to challenge Apple’s iTunes hegemony in the music distribution business, said some analysts.

However, the service met with lukewarm reception in Europe. In the U.K. only one carrier partnered with Nokia to offer the service.

The company’s problems with the service have been much greater in the U.S.  Nokia stumbled in its launch of the 5800 XpressMusic phones after users complained of crippling connectivity problems with the device. Nokia pulled the U.S. version of the phone off its shelves and offered the handsets a few days later after a fix.

The company is now reportedly rethinking its strategy for the music subscription service in the U.S. Without subsidies from carriers such as AT&T and Verizon, American mobile phone users are unlikely to pay the high cost of handsets that are bundled with music. Nokia will also have to simplify the Digital Rights Management (DRM) issues in the service that could potentially cripple how users listen to the music before it is introduced in the U.S.

Garmin Edge 500 is GPS for the Bicycle

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

500x_garmin_01Not content in being number one in satellite navigation for the automobile, Garmin has just announced the Edge 500 for the bicycle.

The Edge 500 is one of those bike consoles that can do quite a lot more than your average bike console. Not only can it track the user’s GPS position, but it also gives the user readouts for velocity, distance, time, elevation, as well as climb and descent. It can also detect temperature, and will even change time zones automatically. Yes, a bike with an Edge 500 on it will call all other bikes wimps.

When connected to the Garmin heart rate monitor, the Edge 500 can detect changes in the user’s heart rate. This information can be used to detect the calories burned on the ride. As for the battery life, it is good for about 18 hours worth of “play-time”.

Apparently, Garmin was inspired by actual Tour De France rider Christian Vande Velde. He suggested a small device with a big screen, easy-to-use buttons, and a sturdier mount, “and Garmin listened”. By the way, Vande Velde is a member of Team Garmin’s bike team, so I really hope that they always listen to him.

The Edge 500 is going to be available soon for a retail price of $249.99, and $349.99 with the heart rate monitor and speed/cadence sensor.

Game Gun available for pre-order

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

gamegun-vid-new-1-1Those of you that love the FPS shooter games will fall even more in love with them with the Wireless Game Gun. As you can see by the You Tube video after the jump, someone has finally perfected a way of putting a screen on a motion controlled controller that resembles a military machine gun.

That someone is an engineer and inventor who is known all across the tech and gadget blogosphere as The Redneck Techie. The video shows him moving around the room and stalking in some “classic Tom Clancy” style with this unique gaming peripheral.

You will notice the cord that dangles from the gun and ends up in his pocket. That is apparently the batteries for the unit, which “were too big to fit into the gun”. Perhaps version 2.0 will not have this wire and really be wireless, but I don’t see it being any more annoying than the Wii-strap.

The Wireless Game Gun is Plug-and-Play compatible with Xbox 360, Wii, PS3, and the PC, and maybe even for Macs. You can look into pre-ordering it here, but you might notice that the site looks a little antiquated. It is projected that the Wireless Game Gun will be available by Christmas, but there is no word on price as yet.

iRex and Barnes & Noble to Launch New U.S. E-book Reader

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

irex

The battle for dominance in the electronic books market is far from settled as new entrants continue to jostle their way in. iRex, a Netherlands-based company, has said it will launch a new e-book reader in the U.S. later this year. The e-reader will have a 8.1-inch touchscreen, stylus-based navigation and 3G wireless connectivity.

iRex has also partnered with Barnes & Noble to integrate the latter’s e-book store into its upcoming device.

Amazon’s Kindle and the Sony Reader have helped turn e-book readers into one of the hottest consumer electronics products. In May, E Ink, which almost exclusively supplies the black-and-white displays that power most e-readers, said more than a million readers use its technology.

Big retail book stores are taking notice. Earlier this year, Borders U.K. introduced a £189 ($276) e-book reader called Elonex. The Elonex will come pre-loaded with about 1,000 books and will support both the open-source ePub and proprietary Adobe formats.

In July, Barnes & Noble launched its own e-book store and said that it will power Plastic Logic’s e-reader targeted at business users. By partnering with iRex, Barnes & Noble hopes to expand its reach.

iRex was founded in 2005 as a spin-off from Royal Phillips Electronics. The company’s name stands for ‘Interactive Reading Experience,’ CEO Hans Brons told Wired.com in an interview earlier. iRex launched an e-reader with a 10.1-inch screen last year. But the company has mostly focused on business users, says Brons.

iRex’s upcoming reader will put it in competition with the larger e-book readers such as Amazon Kindle DX and the Plastic Logic e-reader. iRex hasn’t revealed how much its e-reader will cost in the U.S.

“All 6-inch displays today use first generation technology when it comes to driving the ink particles on the electronic paper,” says Brons. “We have improved on that tech and our customers can see the difference in the brightness of the screen and contrast ratio of the display.”
