iPhone Gets .Net App Development

Novell has announced MonoTouch 1.0, a commercial SDK kit that allows developers to build iPhone apps using Microsoft’s .Net Framework instead of the Apple-designated C or Objective-C languages. The SDK leverages Novell’s Mono runtime for running Windows apps on non-Windows systems, allowing developers to utilize code and libraries written for .Net and programming languages like C#.

Parrot’s iPhone-friendly RKi8400 car stereo

Worried about leaving your iPhone or iPod on the front seat of your car to tempt thieves?

A new car stereo from Parrot has a ’secret’ compartment to hide your tech from envious eyes and recharge it at the same time – although it won’t help much if you want to use your iPhone for navigation, too.

The removable front panel of the Parrot RKi8400 is equipped with magnets for simple insertion/removal of the front panel with one hand.

Smaller screen than Apple’s

The RKi8400 is an FM/AM RDS car stereo that comes festooned with Apple-friendly features. A large dial and full colour 2.4-inch screen lets you view album covers stored in your iPhone (or iPod) and enables easy navigation of playlists, while Bluetooth enables you to play music sent from the iPhone 3 (or other mobile phones and players), via Bluetooth Stereo

Windows Mobile Gets Fall Fashion Update

Microsoft is giving its operating system for smartphones a new look in time for the holiday shopping season. The world’s largest software maker said Tuesday that phones running the next version of Windows Mobile will hit store shelves worldwide on Oct. 6. “Windows Mobile 6.5,” as the new system is called, has an updated look that brings Microsoft’s offering more in line with competitors such as Research In Motion’s BlackBerry and Apple’s iPhone.

Review Time: JH Audio’s Ridiculously Expensive, Totally Awesome Custom Earbuds

We all know a good earbud is hard to find. Just open up a new iPod, iPhone or hell any portable audio device out there and have a listen to the included ‘buds. They’re crap, right? JH audio is on the opposite end of the spectrum. Its newest bespoke earbuds, the JH13s, deliver some of the crazy-best aural experiences we’ve ever heard in an earbud. Here’s an excerpt from reviewer Jackson Lynch:

The buds delivered fantastic sound separation with uncompromising booming bass, rattling mids and crystalline highs. For a lark, we tried mating the JH13s with the Ray Samuels Audio P-51 Mustang high-resolution headphone amp and ALO Audio’s 30-pin iPod line-out cable, just to see if that could improve on what we deemed to be aural perfection.

Adding these two (expensive) components opened the floodgates of unadulterated sound, yielding the richest, most complete experience we’ve ever coaxed out of a set of earbuds. Yes, the JH13s are terribly expensive, but they also make for the most luxurious listening this side of heaven.

Samsung Joins the App Store Party

samsungSamsung will be the latest handset maker to get an app store of its own. The company announced plans to introduce a marketplace for games and other applications from developers that will launch Sept. 14.

The app store will initially be available in Europe. And only select models of Samsung phones, including the Omnia and I8910 HD devices can access the app store, says the company.

Samsung is late to the game. Since Apple introduced the iPhone App Store as a centralized clearing house for mobile applications in 2008, app stores have become an important part of the business strategy for most handset makers. BlackBerry manufacturer Research In Motion, Palm and Nokia have all launched app stores this year. Even cellphone carrier Verizon has been courting developers to create programs for its users.

The lack of Samsung’s app store’s availability in the U.S. is likely to dampen developer interest in its announcement. Earlier this month, the company announced the availability of a mobile widget software developer kit (SDK). The SDK would allow programmers to create widgets for different Samsung phones that use different operating systems, including the company’s own version. The company also plans to hold a widget developer camp in San Francisco from September 11-13.

For Samsung, that may not be enough to woo developers away from Apple, Palm and Android.

TomTom’s iPhone App and the Road Ahead for Personal Nav

Since the new version of the iPhone’s operating system has been released, at least half a dozen software vendors have announced turn-by-turn, GPS navigation systems for Apple’s mobile phone. However, when a company that’s already sold 30 million standalone nav systems decides to join the fray, it’s a sign this app category is starting to be really serious business. Last week, after two months of anticipation, Amsterdam-based TomTom unwrapped its eponymous app for the iPhone and started selling it on the iTunes store for $99.99.

iSuck: Apple’s Five Worst Products, Ever

Apple, it seems, is all about the hits. The iPod, the iPhone and the MacBook are all phenomenally successful, both as designs and as commercial wins. These highlights, though, lead us to expect a lot of the company, and serve to make the misses stick out all the more. Apple has some embarrassing techno-skeletons in its beautiful white iCloset. Here are five.

The Hockey Puck Mouse

For a company that built itself on the first commercial, mouse-equipped computer, it’s odd that Apple has never made a good mouse. Even the current Mighty Mouse isn’t so mighty, pretending as it does to have just one button while actually sporting two, and inexplicably copying the ThinkPad’s red nipple instead of using a scroll wheel.

But the prize for Worst Mouse Ever goes the the “hockey puck”, which shipped with the original iMacs in 1998. Not only was it ugly, it was hard to hold due to size and shape, and frustrated users with a too-short cord. Rarely for Apple, style not only triumphed over substance, it utterly buried it.

The iPod Hi-Fi

Apple’s $350 speaker lasted just 18 months before it was taken out back, shot and sprinkled with lime. It was an odd product from Apple, which normally leaves these kinds of accessories to a healthy third-party market. The Bose-designed box had stereo speakers and an iPod dock on the top, and the high price tag and poor performance meant market failure.

Earbuds

Just like the lack of a good mouse, the dearth of decent headphones from Apple is another paradox. The sound quality may be comparable to or even better than the bundled ‘buds from other manufacturers, but they’ll break, and the $30 Apple wants for a new pair is better spent almost anywhere else.

I have gone through a lot of them, and the longest any set lasted was a few months. This includes the latest, remote and microphone-toting model, which managed to last about six weeks before dying.

QuickTake

Long before Apple put a terrible camera in the iPhone, it put a terrible camera into a camera: The 0.3-megapixel (640 x 480) Apple QuickTake. The camera had no way to focus, and zooming was done by walking closer to your subject. Neither could you blast away like we do with the digicams of today: The QuickTake 100, built by Kodak, could fit just eight pictures into its 1-MB memory.

The problem was that the market was immature, and the QuickTake was one of the first consumer digicams on the market. Compare this to the successful strategy of Apple since the iPod: Wait until the market has been established, then make a simpler, better product than anyone else.

It started so well back in 2001. Apple’s jukebox software was built on the third-party SoundJam which it bought the year before, and was a slick, quick and easy-to-use music player for a long time.

Then Apple decided that iTunes should be the conduit for the iPhone, and kept piling on bloated features. What had started as a pared-down, single-minded and simple application started to sync with Outlook, gained the useless cover flow view and, on the Mac at least, appeared to have a monopoly on the spinning beach-ball of death.

Worse, the iTunes Store, a fantastically user-friendly music store, gained weight in the form of the awful, hard to navigate App Store.

Of course, these days we have a new, simple and fast music app. It’s called Spotify. Apple, though, has shafted itself. The problem with selling a revolutionary device which is an iPod, a cellphone and an internet device, all in one, is that the software to support it needs to be similarly multitasking.

Anything we missed? While these failures are big, we have restricted them to the modern-day Apple, and ignored the Jobs-less wilderness years of beige boxes and overpriced printers. Feel free to add more in the comments.
