Remember when everyone wanted to keep computer viruses off of computers because they were simply destructive? There were those that their sole purpose was to wipe data off of your hard drive. Some were bold enough to fire off a message on your screen, before continually rebooting your computer or other annoying actions.
Then along came spyware, a separate subset of computer viruses. Their purpose was to look for information on your computer or direct you somewhere on the Internet in order to get data from you. Spyware does not always want to harm your computer, although it can in the process of trying to extract information from your computer.
One type of spyware that is incredibly harmful, and typically very quiet, is the keylogger. What keyloggers do is exactly what the name implies, it logs or records your key strokes. They sit on your computer and watch what you type. While recording your key strokes, it will send them off to another computer where they are reassembled, usually by criminals, and put into a format they can use. Think about it, when you pay bills online, if you access your bank account through the Internet, maybe even an email to friends; they may all be recorded.
“Well I have the latest and greatest anti-spyware, anti-virus, and a firewall protecting my computer.” your friend says. Fair enough, but how often does he or she update their software? How often is their computer scanned with their security tools? What type of Internet sites are they visiting? How apt are they to open email from anyone? The better question here would be, “What is the harm in having one extra application that encrypts your key strokes, is light on system resources, and is designed in mind to circumvent even

“US-based company Genesi, which builds ARM Cortex-powered appliances that could be compatible with the RISC OS Open Beagleboard work, is said to be in talks with RISC OS companies over a possible port of the OS to its products. It’s hoped ROS 5 could be made to run on the lightweight EFIKA MX Open Client, which sports a 800MHz Cortex-A8 processor, 3D graphics hardware, 512M RAM, wifi networking and more. Genesi analyst Matt Sealey said: ‘RISC OS is really popular in the UK and the last dedicated RISC OS box – the Iyonix – has been discontinued for six months. We are currently questioning the relevant companies in the UK, including [ROS 5 owners] Castle, about collaboration and marketing efforts, and the support they’d need to make it a reality.’”

Nokia will postpone the launch of its ‘Comes with Music’ music subscription service in the U.S. to next year, according to reports.
Nokia launched the service, widely seen as a potential iTunes competitor, in the U.K. last year by bundling free unlimited music downloads with some of its handsets. The first of Nokia’s phones, the 5310 XpressMusic, featured the service. Nokia would offer a year’s worth of music to its users free and charge users for it after that. Customers were allowed to keep all the music they already downloaded.
If successful, Nokia could be in a position to challenge Apple’s iTunes hegemony in the music distribution business, said some analysts.
However, the service met with lukewarm reception in Europe. In the U.K. only one carrier partnered with Nokia to offer the service.
The company’s problems with the service have been much greater in the U.S. Nokia stumbled in its launch of the 5800 XpressMusic phones after users complained of crippling connectivity problems with the device. Nokia pulled the U.S. version of the phone off its shelves and offered the handsets a few days later after a fix.
The company is now reportedly rethinking its strategy for the music subscription service in the U.S. Without subsidies from carriers such as AT&T and Verizon, American mobile phone users are unlikely to pay the high cost of handsets that are bundled with music. Nokia will also have to simplify the Digital Rights Management (DRM) issues in the service that could potentially cripple how users listen to the music before it is introduced in the U.S.

Asus, which set the netbooks market on fire with its Eee PCs, has some exciting new products coming up for release this year. Leaked slides of the company’s product roadmap for the U.S. show it is planning to introduce a new netbook with a 12-inch display and Nvidia’s Ion graphics chip and a tablet PC with multi-touch capability.
The new netbooks are expected to be priced from $300 to $500, says the Netbook News website.
Despite an overall slowdown in PC sales due to the weak economic environment, the netbook market has been going gangbusters. Sales of netbooks grew 40 percent in the second quarter, almost twice that of the growth rate of larger notebook PCs, says DisplaySearch, a research arm of the NPD Group.
Asus’ 1201N netbook is likely to have a 12-inch display, an Atom N270 processor, 2 GB RAM and 250 GB storage. It will also include Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capability and at $500 will be among the company’s premium products. The netbook is expected to be available in mid-October.
Around that time, Asus will also have a convertible tablet PC running Windows 7, says Netbook News. The $550 T91 convertible tablet is expected to come with a 32 GB solid state drive.
Check out a slide of the Asus Eee PC roadmap for details about upcoming netbook configurations and the company’s planned releases for the year.

Yes, there are a lot of iPod or other MP3 speakers out there, and most of them begin with “i”. I suppose what makes the iHat unique is the fact that it is seasonal.
Seasonal, meaning made for the winter season. It’s getting colder where I am living, and I could use a hat to keep warm. If the hat happens to have a speaker in each ear, then more power to it. Now if it was made to be wireless, I guarantee that every skier would want to wear one of these.
The iHat is compatible with anything that has a headphone jack, but I’m not certain how good the sound is. In fact, I was wondering if you could turn the hat inside out and use it as an iPod speaker and rock the room. The good news is that you don’t need batteries or any power but a charged iPod for the iHat.
Isn’t there some hip hop fashion that uses winter hats, all year round? Perhaps this iHat is for them. Doesn’t Emenim wear a hat like this? I really need to get more into modern day music these days.
Anyway, the iHat should be available from the BB shopping website for about $25 on December 14.

Not content in being number one in satellite navigation for the automobile, Garmin has just announced the Edge 500 for the bicycle.
The Edge 500 is one of those bike consoles that can do quite a lot more than your average bike console. Not only can it track the user’s GPS position, but it also gives the user readouts for velocity, distance, time, elevation, as well as climb and descent. It can also detect temperature, and will even change time zones automatically. Yes, a bike with an Edge 500 on it will call all other bikes wimps.
When connected to the Garmin heart rate monitor, the Edge 500 can detect changes in the user’s heart rate. This information can be used to detect the calories burned on the ride. As for the battery life, it is good for about 18 hours worth of “play-time”.
Apparently, Garmin was inspired by actual Tour De France rider Christian Vande Velde. He suggested a small device with a big screen, easy-to-use buttons, and a sturdier mount, “and Garmin listened”. By the way, Vande Velde is a member of Team Garmin’s bike team, so I really hope that they always listen to him.
The Edge 500 is going to be available soon for a retail price of $249.99, and $349.99 with the heart rate monitor and speed/cadence sensor.

Camping season for most is coming to a close, but if you camp all year round, this is one item you’ll benefit from. Having a hot cup of coffee when it’s not so warm outside is always a good idea. Yes, it might make you appear as if you aren’t exactly roughing it, but it’s nice to have at least a couple of things to make camping a little more convenient. This Brunton Flip-N-Drip isn’t overly large either, it’s only the size of a thermos.
In order to make the coffee, you boil water in the base of the coffee maker. Then you just attach what is called the brew chamber, that is already filled with the coffee grounds of your choosing. Once it’s attached you flip the entire thing over and it will begin the percolation process. That portion of the process itself takes about 10-12 minutes. After that is all finished you remove the 16 oz mug that features a double wall and is insulated. The Flip-N-Drip isn’t available just yet, but once it is you’ll be able to pick it up for $45 from Brunton.
